6 Fascinating Things I Don’t Want to Miss: The 2016 U.S. Healthcare Collaborative

October 7, 2016 Mike Pallagi

The 2016 U.S. Healthcare Collaborative—a free, annual, two-day event offered exclusively to Orion Health customers—kicks off in less than two weeks. Featuring interactive educational sessions and group discussions moderated by a variety of subject matter experts, knowledge exchanges led by actual customers, and industry speakers sharing their product experiences, the event promises to send attendees home with inspiring stories, innovative strategies, and new ways to think about how technology can enable their organizations to improve the lives of the people in their care.

So, in no particular order, here are six things I’m really looking forward to:

  1. Wayne Oxenham’s keynote. If you haven’t met him yet, you’re in for a treat. Wayne assumed the role of president, N.A., just this past February, yet he’s already effected sweeping changes throughout the organization. He’s renewed an already deep commitment to helping customers achieve their goals and improve the lives of their patients, driven the creation of robust, high-quality, industry-celebrated content, and embraced change as nothing less than an opportunity to improve the lives of people everywhere. Read his blog posts here and here to get a preview of Wayne’s uncompromising vision.
  1. Robert Van Arlen’s keynote. A motivational and corporate-engagement speaker who has brought a message of transformation to over 1,000 speaking engagements in 15 countries, Robert will offer his insight on the “music” of collaboration, informed by his own inspirational journey and his love of the art. I’ve never seen a speaker engage an audience to make music with tuned percussion tubes during a presentation, but that’s about to change. Get a preview of Robert here.
  1. Rhapsody-training sessions. Rhapsody is a foundation product, so I’m expecting a lot from each of the two tracks of participatory sessions on October 19. I believe you should, too—they’re being conducted by professional Rhapsody trainers whose expertise is without peer. So bring your toughest questions—they’re ready for them.
  1. Ian McCrae’s TEDxAuckland talk. CEO Ian McCrae’s encore presentation of his wildly popular TEDxAuckland talk is the perfect precision-medicine primer—a genial, first-person account of one man’s journey to establish as much of his “omics” profile as possible. Whether you’re a seasoned precision-medicine researcher or have never even heard of the concept before, you’re sure to be entertained by this electric speaker’s time on stage.
  1. Mark Frisse’s keynote. As well-established organizations begin to entertain the idea of folding emerging consumer-based technologies into their current operations, some big questions are popping up. Hearing the Accenture Professor of Biomedical Informatics for Vanderbilt University’s School of Medicine explore those questions—and identify some new opportunities these technologies will create—will surely be a riveting experience. I can’t wait.
  1. Customer panels. The real challenge with the customer panels will be choosing which tracks to join and which tracks to miss. Customers like Vanderbilt, HealthInfoNet, Innovation Care Partners, Keystone HIE, St. Vincent's HealthCare, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, Oregon Health Authority, Kaleida Health, and others will all be giving their honest, hype-free, spin-free takes on their technology experiences and strategies. These are real-world accounts straight from the front lines of healthcare, and I’m excited to hear all of it.
