Leveraging an EHR to Avoid Duplicate and Unnecessary Tests

April 11, 2018
Taped Live from HIMSS 2018 trade show floor. Dr. Allen Ausford, practicing physician in Alberta discuses a young female patient who had moved away from the clinic. The patient displayed symptoms of a urinary tract infection. Her mother took her to a walk-in clinic who ordered a urine test and put her on antibiotics. After repeat visits, the clinic advised the patient to see a specialist. In visiting her former family physician, Dr. Ausford, he was able to quickly pull up her information that showed her results were negative and she would not need to see a specialist. Through more aggregate data Dr. Ausford was able to change the course of action, not order unnecessary or invasive tests, and learn more about the patients’ problems. The result of her discomfort turned out to be a milk allergy.
